Importing a car from the USA to Slovakia: what you need to know

Customs duty, VAT, vehicle approval and registration. And why the report of the technical service is the biggest unknown.

A car from a US auction tempts with its price and its choice. But the auction price is only the start. Before the car gets Slovak plates, you add transport, customs duty, VAT, inspections and the approval. And sometimes a past that nobody told you about.

This guide shows what an import really costs in 2026, how to go about it step by step and what to check before you bid.

In short

  • You pay 10% customs duty and 23% VAT. Since 1 July 2026 the duty can drop to 0% for cars built in the USA, but you must prove the origin.
  • The registration fee is low and predictable. For a 2018 car with 118 kW you pay 90 euros, 45 euros if you pay electronically.
  • A car without a European certificate of conformity needs an individual approval for 300 euros and a report from a technical service.
  • A private car in Slovakia pays no road tax.

What did it go through in the US?

Once a car is registered here, its American past is easy to hide. The VIN still shows it: auction photos, damage records and title brands.

Customs duty, VAT and the registration fee

Everything is calculated from the customs value: the price of the car with transport and insurance up to the EU border. The usual duty on passenger cars is 10%. Then 23% VAT is added on the customs value plus the duty. Since January 2025 it has replaced the previous 20%.

New since 1 July 2026: EU Regulation 2026/1455 cuts the duty on goods of US origin to 0%, for now until the end of 2029. Passenger cars are included. What counts, though, is where the car was built, not where you bought it. A Japanese, Korean or Mexican car from a US auction still pays 10%. According to the European Commission, a "Made in USA" sticker or a line on the invoice is not enough. For a used auction car the origin is hard to prove, so plan with 10%.

The registration fee is calculated as a rate based on engine power times an ecological coefficient. If the emission standard cannot be read from the papers, which is common with American cars, the coefficient is set by the date of first registration. For cars first registered from September 2016 to August 2020 it is 0.45. If you pay electronically, you pay half.

Road tax applies only to cars used for business. A private car does not pay it.

Cost example: a 2018 saloon

You buy a 2018 saloon with a 2.0 engine and 118 kW of power for USD 12,000 and pay USD 1,800 to ship it to a port in the EU:

Customs value (price plus transport) USD 13,800
Duty 10% USD 1,380
VAT 23% USD 3,491
Total taxes at import USD 4,871
Same car with accepted US origin (0% duty) USD 3,174
Registration fee (200 × 0.45) €90
Individual vehicle approval €300
Originality check (kontrola originality) €120
Plates with a random number €50

The customs office converts at its own exchange rate. Not included: auction fees, transport in the USA and in Europe, the freight forwarder, the report of the technical service, modifications, the technical and emissions inspections, the waste confirmation and insurance. The price of the originality check follows the TÜV SÜD price list.

Port and customs clearance

Slovakia has no seaport. Cars from the USA usually arrive in Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp or Koper. The Financial Administration (Finančná správa) describes the procedure like this: the car travels in transit under a T1 document to the Slovak customs office of destination, where you file an electronic customs declaration, and once it is released for free circulation you can register the car.

You can also clear the car in the port country, for example in Germany with 19% VAT. For a used car you then usually do not pay Slovak VAT, but you still need the individual approval. Check in advance with the district office which customs document it will want.

Individual vehicle approval

An American car mostly has no European certificate of conformity (COC), so it goes through the national individual approval of a single vehicle imported from a third country. You apply at the district office in the regional seat, at the road transport and roads department. The fee is 300 euros, or 900 euros if expedited within five working days.

With the application you need the protocols of the originality check, the technical inspection and the emissions inspection, all with the result "fit" and not older than 15 days. You also need the report of the technical service for verification or a statement from the manufacturer, a draft of the technical description and a confirmation of responsibility for the end of life vehicle waste, for example through idovoz.sk.

ImportantNobody publishes the price or the turnaround time of the technical service report, and it is the biggest unknown of the whole import. Ask for a quote before you buy the car.

Salvage, rebuilt, flood: cars after a crash

Many cheap US cars have a salvage, rebuilt or flood title. An insurer has already written them off as a total loss once, or they stood in water. Slovak rules do not deal with the American title brand. Whether a car can be registered is decided by the originality check, the technical and emissions inspections and the report of the technical service.

The originality check examines the identification marks and looks for tampering. A car with an altered, replaced or welded VIN location risks the result "unfit". Water damage often shows only later, in the electrics, the airbags or the ABS.

The Slovak registration certificate will not tell you that a car was a total loss in the USA.

That is why step 2 matters so much: check the American history before the auction, not after it.

Our guide to checking the history of an imported car shows what else can get lost when a car crosses a border.

Step by step: from the listing to your doorstep

This is how an import goes in practice. The times are rough, not official deadlines. For the whole journey, plan roughly six to ten weeks.

  1. Set a budget and choose a car

    before you buy

Add transport, duty, VAT, the technical service report, the inspections and the fees to the auction price. The registration fee grows with engine power, noticeably above 210 kW.

  2. Check the VIN

    before you bid

Ask for the VIN and check the American history before you bid:

    • a salvage, rebuilt or flood title,
    • auction photos and reported damage,
    • odometer readings over the years,
    • the country of manufacture. A VIN starting with 1, 4 or 5 usually means a car built in the USA.
  3. Ask a technical service for a quote

    before you bid

Ask a technical service for verification whether this particular model will cope, what will need to be changed and how much the report costs. Whether the import is worth it depends on that.

  4. Bid and buy

    auction day

Work out your maximum bid including the auction fees. Pay only if you get the original title (Certificate of Title), and keep the invoice and the proof of payment safe.

  5. Transport and shipping

    2 to 4 weeks

The freight forwarder collects the car, takes it to a US port and arranges the export. Choose the destination port, for example Bremerhaven, Hamburg or Koper.

  6. Transit and customs clearance

    after arrival

The car travels under a T1 document to a Slovak customs office, where you file the customs declaration and pay the duty and VAT. For 0%, prepare proof of the US origin and of direct shipping.

  7. Modifications to the European standard

usually a few days to 2 weeks

    Typically you need:

    • amber rear indicators instead of red ones,
    • a rear fog light,
    • headlights with an E mark,
    • a speedometer in km/h.

The technical service confirms what is mandatory.

  8. Technical service report

    depends on the service

The technical service for verification prepares a test report and a draft of the technical description. At the same time, arrange the confirmation of responsibility for end of life vehicle waste, for example through idovoz.sk.

  9. Originality check, STK and emissions inspection

    1 to 2 visits

Go through the originality check and the technical and emissions inspections. All protocols must have the result "fit" and must not be older than 15 days.

  10. Individual approval

    1 visit

At the district office in the regional seat you file an application with the US title, the proof of acquisition, the protocols, the technical service report and the waste confirmation. The fee is 300 euros. You receive the technical description and part II of the registration certificate.

  11. Registration at the traffic inspectorate

    1 visit

Take out compulsory liability insurance (PZP) and pay the registration fee at the district traffic inspectorate. You receive the plates and part I of the registration certificate. Check in advance whether they will want an official translation of the American title.

  12. Fit the plates and drive

    done

With the plates and the registration certificate you can hit the road. Keep all the American documents. When you sell the car, a documented history is an argument for honest buyers.

Good to know

  • Powerful cars: above 210 kW the fee rate is 1,000 euros times the coefficient, which is 450 euros for a 2018 car.
  • Inspection deadlines: all protocols can be at most 15 days old, so plan the originality check, the STK, the emissions inspection and the district office close together.
  • Moving back: if you lived at least 12 months outside the EU and used the car there for at least 6 months, you can import it without duty and VAT if you register it within 12 months.
  • Buying in the EU instead? A car bought inside the EU pays no customs duty and no import VAT at the border. National taxes and registration costs still apply. Our guide to buying a car at auction in Europe explains that route.

Importing from the USA to another country?

Customs duty is the same everywhere in the EU. VAT, registration tax and the approval rules are not. Choose a country to read its guide.
