What is a VIN, and where do I find it?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17 character code stamped on every car built since 1981. Standardised worldwide under ISO 3779, it identifies one specific vehicle and never changes. No two cars share a VIN.
- 1Base of the windscreen on the driver side. Stand outside and look through the glass at the corner of the dashboard.
- 2Driver door jamb or door post. Open the door and check the sticker where the door latches.
- 3Under the bonnet, stamped on the engine block or the firewall at the back of the engine bay.
- 4Boot floor, under the spare wheel on many models.
