MrVIN the bear How the free check works

Enter a Ford VIN in the box above and we check it against official registries and manufacturer build data, with a free preview of what exists for the exact car. Ford of Europe uses its own VIN layout, so the useful reads sit in different positions than on most makes, and the tables below show where.

Ford WMI codes (characters 1 to 3)

The opening code separates the continents, which matters because American Fords are common imports:

CodeWhat they say
WF0Ford of Europe, whichever European plant built the car
NM0Ford Otosan, Turkey (the Transit family and Courier models)
1FAFord USA passenger cars (the Mustang you are looking at, most likely)
1FTFord USA trucks and pickups

Where Ford of Europe hides the year and month

European Fords do not use the industry position for the year. Ford stamps a year letter and a month letter late in the number instead, just before the serial, using the same year letters as the industry table: K is 2019, L is 2020, M is 2021 and so on.

The middle of a European Ford VIN belongs to Ford's internal body, model and assembly codes, including a filler pair of X letters that confuses generic decoders. When in doubt, date the car through records: that is what the check above reads.

What the free check adds

The VIN describes the car as built. The check above adds what happened since: odometer readings recorded at inspections and services across 30+ European countries, damage and theft records, the import trail, and the manufacturer build data where it is available for the make.

The preview of what exists for the exact car is free, and only the full history report is paid. If the preview looks empty, you have lost nothing.

Where to find the VIN on the car

Check at least two locations and make sure they agree with each other and with the documents. A VIN that differs between locations is a walk away flag on its own.

  1. Windscreen base visible from outside through the glass on the driver side.
  2. Door jamb sticker on the driver side B pillar on most cars.
  3. Body stamp under the bonnet, under a floor flap, or in the boot, depending on the make.
  4. Documents the registration certificate and the service book both carry it, and both must match the metal.

Works for every Ford

The check reads the VIN, not the badge, so every model is covered. The ones buyers look up most:

Decoding VINs at volume?

The same decoding sits behind our partner API: send a VIN, get the identity and the recorded history back as JSON. Dealers, marketplaces and fleets use it to check cars before listing them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I decode a Ford VIN for free?

Yes. The check box runs the VIN against official registries and manufacturer build data with a free preview of what exists for the exact car. Only the full history report is paid.

Where is the year in a Ford VIN?

On a European Ford, in Ford's own year letter near the end of the number, followed by a month letter, not in the industry position 10. The letters match the industry year table: K 2019, L 2020, M 2021. American Fords follow the standard US layout with the year at position 10.

Why does my Ford VIN have XX in the middle?

That is Ford of Europe's filler pair inside its internal code block, and it is normal, not a defect. It is also why generic decoders often give up on European Fords: the layout is Ford's own.

What can a VIN check tell me that the VIN itself cannot?

Everything that happened after the factory: odometer readings recorded at inspections and services, damage and theft records, the import trail across countries, and the factory specification to compare against the advert. The preview of those findings is free at MrVIN.
