What a VIN decoder can and cannot tell you

The 17 characters of a VIN describe the car as it left the factory: who built it, where, in which model year, on which platform. That part is free by definition, it is written in the number itself, and the make pages above give you the tables to read it.

What the VIN does not contain is the car's life since: recorded mileage, damage, theft records, imports, and the factory option list. Those live in registries and manufacturer archives. Our check looks there, shows a free preview of what exists, and the full report is paid only when you decide the findings are worth it.
