How the free check works
Enter a BMW VIN in the box above and we check it against official registries and manufacturer build data, with a free preview of what exists for the exact car. BMW is the make where a records check matters most for the basics: European BMW VINs do not carry a year character, so even the model year has to come from factory records rather than the number itself.
BMW WMI codes (characters 1 to 3)
The first three characters separate the BMW lines and plants:
| Code | What they say |
|---|---|
WBA | BMW passenger cars, Germany |
WBS | BMW M GmbH (M3, M5 and the other full M cars) |
WBY | BMW i (i3, i8 and the newer electric line) |
WBX | X3 of the first generation, built under contract in Graz, Austria |
4US | BMW USA, Spartanburg (older X models) |
5UX | BMW USA, Spartanburg (X models) |
5YM | BMW USA, Spartanburg (M versions of the X models) |
WMW | MINI, which has its own decoder page here |
X5 and X3 imports from the USA are common on the European used market, and the WMI is the tell the seller cannot remove. An American early life means American records: auction listings, insurance write offs and mileage in miles. That is exactly what the paid check digs up.
Why a European BMW VIN does not show the year
BMW stamps a model year character into position 10 only on cars built for North America. On European market BMWs that position belongs to BMW's own numbering, so reading it against the industry year table gives a wrong answer, and generic decoders do exactly that.
The reliable read is the other way round: the last seven characters identify the individual car in BMW's production records, which is how our check dates it. The registration document then tells you the first registration, which on a BMW is the date that matters for pricing anyway.
A BMW VIN, decoded
WBA3A5G59DNP26082
This is a US market 3 Series, which makes it a good walkthrough because the American layout carries more readable positions:
| VIN characters | What this part says |
|---|---|
WBA | BMW passenger car, built in Germany. |
3A5G5 | BMW's code block for the model, body and equipment of this 3 Series generation. |
9 | The check digit, calculated from the rest of the number on North American cars. |
D | Model year 2013, present because this car was built for the US market. |
N | Assembly code. |
P26082 | The production number that identifies this individual car in factory records. |
What the free check adds
The VIN describes the car as built. The check above adds what happened since: odometer readings recorded at inspections and services across 30+ European countries, damage and theft records, the import trail, and the manufacturer build data where it is available for the make.
The preview of what exists for the exact car is free, and only the full history report is paid. If the preview looks empty, you have lost nothing.
Where to find the VIN on the car
Check at least two locations and make sure they agree with each other and with the documents. A VIN that differs between locations is a walk away flag on its own.
- Windscreen base visible from outside through the glass on the driver side.
- Door jamb sticker on the driver side B pillar on most cars.
- Body stamp under the bonnet, under a floor flap, or in the boot, depending on the make.
- Documents the registration certificate and the service book both carry it, and both must match the metal.
Works for every BMW
The check reads the VIN, not the badge, so every model is covered. The ones buyers look up most:
The same decoding sits behind our partner API: send a VIN, get the identity and the recorded history back as JSON. Dealers, marketplaces and fleets use it to check cars before listing them.

Frequently asked questions
Can I decode a BMW VIN for free?
Yes. The check box runs the VIN against official registries and manufacturer build data with a free preview of what exists for the exact car. That matters more on a BMW than most makes, because the European VIN itself carries less readable information.
Why does my European BMW VIN not show the year?
Because BMW only stamps the year character on cars built for North America. On European cars that position is part of BMW's own numbering, so a generic year table gives a wrong answer. The car is dated through factory records via the last seven characters, which is what our check does.
What is the difference between WBA, WBS and WBY?
WBA is a regular BMW built in Germany. WBS is BMW M GmbH, the full M cars. WBY is the BMW i electric line. An M Sport package car is WBA: the package does not make it an M GmbH build, whatever the advert implies.
What can a VIN check tell me that the VIN itself cannot?
Everything that happened after the factory: odometer readings recorded at inspections and services, damage and theft records, the import trail across countries, and the factory specification to compare against the advert. The preview of those findings is free at MrVIN.
