How to buy a car on Autovit and read a Romanian listing properly
Autovit carries around a million adverts and most of the cars in them arrived from somewhere else. The listing tells you what the seller typed. The two clocks that start when you shake hands are the part nobody mentions.
The promoted block sits above the results. Sorting reorders what is underneath it.
Two things decide most of what happens here. The order you are shown is partly paid for, and almost every car in the results arrived from another country, which means the Romanian record on it is short.
The short version
What to remember
- The block at the top of the results is promovare la inceput de lista. It rotates, and it is paid for.
- Fara accident, primul proprietar and rulaj real are fields the seller filled in, not findings.
- Search with and without diacritics, and search the misspellings. They return different cars.
- There is no pollution tax on a used car any more. The state fees are small; the clocks are what cost money.
- 30 days to declare the car to your local tax office, 90 calendar days to complete the transcriere.
- Most of these cars are imports, so the Romanian file is the last chapter, not the book.

The years before Romania
The Romanian record starts the day the car was registered here, and most of these cars were already old by then. A cross border check covers the years before that.

Where the stock actually is
Autovit is the dedicated marketplace and the default search for almost everybody. It is not the only pool, and the second one is worth the extra ten minutes.
| Where | What it is | Why you would use it |
|---|---|---|
| Autovit.ro | The dedicated car marketplace, around a million adverts, dealer heavy | Working out what a model is actually worth |
| OLX.ro | General classifieds with a large vehicle section, the same group as Autovit | People selling one car once, priced against memory rather than the market |
| mobile.de, AutoScout24 | German inventory, before it becomes Romanian inventory | Where a large share of this market is sourced in the first place |
Autovit and OLX belong to the same group, so a dealer commonly publishes the same car in both places. The difference that matters is not the stock, it is who is setting the price. A dealer prices against other dealers. A person selling their own car prices against what they paid for it in 2019.
The third row is the honest one, and it is why the guide to buying the same car in Germany yourself is worth reading alongside this one. A large part of what you are looking at on Autovit was on a German forecourt within the last year.
The block at the top of the results is bought
Autovit sells sellers two different things, and its own help pages describe both plainly.
| What the seller bought | What it does | What it says about the car |
|---|---|---|
| Promovare la inceput de lista | A dedicated block above the ordinary results, rotating on each page load so every promoted advert gets the same exposure | Nothing |
| Reactualizare | Lifts the advert back to the head of its own band, as often as the seller likes, without changing the expiry date | Nothing |
| Anunturile zilei | A further paid placement | Nothing |
Read the second row again, because it is the one that misleads people. Reactualizare does not change the advert date. A car that has been sitting unsold since spring can be lifted back to the top of its band this morning and look like this morning stock. The seller has learned something about the price in those months, and the advert does not show you that they have.
The filters that do the work
| Filter | What to do with it |
|---|---|
| Pret | Set a ceiling below your real budget, so there is somewhere to move to |
| An fabricatie, Rulaj | Narrow both hard, then relax one at a time and watch what the price does |
| Combustibil, Capacitate cilindrica | Decides the annual local tax as well as the fuel bill |
| Cutie de viteze, Caroserie | Honest filters. They narrow the search without hiding anything |
| Tara de origine | The most useful field on the page, and the one this whole article turns on |
| Judet | Widen it. Two hours out is a different price level and far fewer viewers |
| Saved search with alerts | A correctly priced car does not wait for you to check again on Sunday |
How to search so you see what everyone else misses
Search with and without diacritics. Romanian keyboards and Romanian habits do not always agree, and an advert typed without them is not always returned by a search typed with them. The sloppier spelling usually belongs to a private seller rather than a dealer, which is exactly the seller you are looking for.
Search the model more than one way. Skoda and Škoda, Citroen and Citroën, Megane and Mégane, VW and Volkswagen. Then search the misspellings, because a model name spelled wrong is an advert almost nobody has found.
Browse the category, not just the model. Cars get posted under the wrong make, the wrong body style, or with the model missing from the title entirely. Those adverts are invisible to anyone searching properly, which is why they are still available.
Save the search and turn alerts on. The buyers who get the good cars are not smarter than you. They are earlier.
The listings everyone else skips
A good advert and a good car are not the same thing, and on a marketplace where position is sold they are often the opposite.
| What it looks like | What it often means |
|---|---|
| Four dark photos taken in a yard | Someone who does not sell cars for a living |
| Three lines of description | The same seller, with no interest in marketing |
| No promotion, deep in the ordinary list | The seller did not buy a position, not that the car is worse |
| A misspelled or unusual title | Fewer people have found it |
| A round number price with no reasoning | Chosen by feeling, which means it can be argued with |
Reading a Romanian listing
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fără accident | No accident, claimed. A field the seller filled in, and on an import often one they cannot actually know |
| Rulaj real | Genuine mileage, claimed. The phrase itself tells you the seller expects to be doubted |
| Primul proprietar | First owner. Ask first owner in which country, and check the talon |
| Adus recent | Recently imported. Ask from where, and ask for the foreign paperwork |
| Înmatriculat | Already on Romanian plates. Says nothing about how long it has been here |
| Carte service, istoric service | Service record. Ask to see every page, and check the stamps are not all the same garage on the same day |
| Distribuție schimbată | Timing belt done. Ask for the invoice, not the reassurance |
| Avariat, daună | Damaged, or written off. Honest, and usually priced accordingly |
| Variante | Open to part exchange. Frequently a trader |
Two of these deserve a second look. Rulaj real is a claim that exists because the opposite is common enough to need denying. And fara accident on an imported car is often not a lie so much as a guess, because the crash that the seller does not know about happened before the car had Romanian plates.
Spotting a dealer posing as a private seller
Trading through a private account hides how the car was acquired, which is usually the part worth knowing, and it is common enough here to be worth two minutes before you call.
| Signal | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| One phone number across several live adverts | A private person does not have a fleet |
| Offers financing, delivery or part exchange | Private sellers do not want your old car |
| Trade vocabulary with unusually polished photographs | Written and shot by someone who does this weekly |
| The seller is not the person named on the talon | Selling on someone else's behalf, whatever the account says |
| Several recently imported cars, all described as fara accident | Somebody is buying damaged stock abroad and reselling it here |
Almost all of it came from somewhere else
Romania buys most of its used cars from abroad, and Germany supplies the largest share of them by a wide margin. That is not a warning. Much of the best stock here is imported, and the German cars are often better looked after than the domestic ones.
It matters for one reason only. The Romanian file on an imported car begins the day it was registered here. The accident record, the write off history and the earlier mileage readings sit in the database of the country it came from, and no Romanian seller can produce them for you even if they want to.
What the price should be
Price the car before you talk to anybody. Take the same model, year, engine and comparable mileage across Autovit and OLX, and use the cluster of similar adverts rather than the single cheapest one, because the cheapest is usually cheap for a reason you cannot see in the photographs.
Dealers here generally hold firmer than private sellers and move faster on stock that has been sitting. A private seller usually has less room but decides in an afternoon rather than by committee.
The strongest lever is the same one that works everywhere: a written repair quote. An expiring ITP, worn tyres, a timing belt that is due, all have a number attached, and numbers move prices in a way opinions do not.
When the price genuinely will not move, stop pushing on it and ask for things instead. A fresh ITP, a service, or a second set of tyres cost the seller less than the discount and are worth real money to you.
The two clocks that start when you sign
This is the part that catches people, and it catches them because there are two deadlines rather than one and they are different lengths.
| What | Deadline | What happens if you miss it |
|---|---|---|
| Declare the car to your local tax office | 30 days from the purchase | Penalties on the annual vehicle tax, and a problem the next time you need a fiscal certificate |
| Complete the transcriere | 90 calendar days from the purchase | The registration is suspended automatically. The car is then not legally driveable, and using it anyway is an expensive fine |
The 90 day one is the dangerous half, because nothing arrives to tell you it has expired. The registration simply suspends, and most people find out at a roadside check rather than in the post.
The good news is that the money side is small. There is no pollution or registration tax on a used car in Romania any more, so what you are paying is administrative.
| Cost | Roughly |
|---|---|
| Registration certificate | 49 lei |
| New plates, if you change county or number | 52 lei |
| RAR document | 42 lei |
| ITP, RCA and the annual local vehicle tax | The real recurring cost, and worth pricing for the specific car before you agree anything |
The scams
The pattern is the same one running on every classifieds site in Europe. The car is priced well under a tight cluster of comparable vehicles. The seller moves the conversation to WhatsApp quickly. They are conveniently abroad, working in Germany or Italy, and the car is either with them or in storage. They send photographs and documents that look right. Then they ask for a deposit to reserve it or to arrange transport.
| Signal | What it means |
|---|---|
| Far under the cluster | Something is undisclosed, or the car does not exist |
| Seller working abroad, car in storage | Usually a sign that there is no car |
| Moves to WhatsApp immediately | Wants to avoid a record on the platform |
| Deposit before viewing | Theft |
| Documents only as photographs | The documents may belong to a different vehicle |
| Refuses a video call showing the VIN plate | Time to end the conversation |
Before you pay
- Scroll past the promoted block and sort the ordinary results deliberately.
- Remember that reactualizare does not change the advert date. Ask how long the car has been for sale.
- Price the model across Autovit and OLX before you contact anyone.
- Search with and without diacritics, and search the misspellings.
- Treat fara accident, rulaj real and primul proprietar as claims to verify.
- Ask where the car came from and when it was first registered in Romania.
- Get the VIN in writing and check the years before Romania.
- Ask whose name is on the talon, and see it before you travel.
- Request a video call showing the VIN plate, the dashboard and a cold start.
- Get a written quote for anything visible and use it in the negotiation.
- Declare the car within 30 days and complete the transcriere within 90.
- Never send a deposit for a car you have not seen in person.
The order of the results is bought, the history fields are typed, and the file that would settle either of them is in another country. All three are fixable in about a minute, which is roughly what the check costs you.

Frequently asked questions
Does fara accident on Autovit mean the car has never been damaged?
No. It is a field the seller completes, and Autovit does not verify it. Filtering for it narrows the results to sellers who selected it. The same goes for primul proprietar and rulaj real. On a car that spent most of its life in another country, the seller may not even know, because the records that would say otherwise were never Romanian.
Why are the same few listings always at the top of Autovit?
Because that block is bought. Autovit sells promovare la inceput de lista, which places adverts in a dedicated block above the ordinary results and rotates them on each page load, and reactualizare, which lifts an advert back to the head of its own band without changing its expiry date. Neither says anything about the car. Sort the ordinary list deliberately and read it rather than the block above it.
How long do I have to transfer a car into my name in Romania?
Two different clocks. You have 30 days from the purchase to declare the car to your local tax office, and 90 calendar days to complete the transcriere. Miss the 90 days and the registration is suspended automatically, which turns a paperwork delay into an undriveable car and a fine if you use it anyway.
What does it cost to put a used car in my name in Romania?
Much less than most buyers expect, because there is no pollution or registration tax on used cars any more. The state fees are around 49 lei for the registration certificate, about 52 lei for plates if you change county or number, and roughly 42 lei for the RAR document. The real costs are the ITP, the RCA policy and the annual local vehicle tax.
Is it worth searching OLX.ro as well as Autovit?
Yes, and for a specific reason. Both belong to the same group, so a dealer often publishes the same car in both places, but OLX carries proportionally more people selling one car once. Those sellers price against what they remember paying rather than against the market, which is where the differences appear. Price the model on Autovit, then go looking on OLX.
Most Romanian used cars are imports. Why does that matter?
Because the Romanian file on an imported car starts the day it was registered here, and most of these cars are ten years old or more by then. Everything before that, the accident history, the write off records, the earlier mileage readings, sits in another country database. A seller can be entirely honest about the Romanian chapter and still be describing the shortest part of the story.
About this guide
- How the promoted block works: from Autovit's own help pages describing promovare la inceput de lista, its rotation on each page load, and reactualizare leaving the advert expiry date unchanged.
- The deadlines and the fees: the 30 day fiscal declaration and the 90 calendar day transcriere under OUG 195/2002, after which the registration suspends automatically. The lei figures are the state fees at the time of writing and are worth confirming before you budget from them.
- Listing terms: the local words are left exactly as they appear on the platform, because a translated term cannot be searched for. The condition and history fields in particular are seller declarations, not verified facts.
- Negotiating ranges and seasonal patterns: typical estimates rather than rules. They move with the model, the season, the seller and how long the advert has been up, and are worth treating as a starting point rather than a target.
- Why the VIN matters here: a border crossing is where a car paper trail usually goes missing, covered in how to check an imported car, and the mileage side in odometer fraud. If the car you are looking at came from Germany, the import guide for this market covers what it costs to bring one over yourself.
