MrVIN the bear The short answer

For a car you know or suspect was imported, MrVIN: the pre UK life is exactly what the report covers, from EUR 19.90 excluding VAT with a free preview before you pay. For a UK only car where outstanding finance is the real worry, HPI is genuinely the safest choice, its finance data and GBP 30,000 guarantee are hard to match, and it is honest to say so plainly rather than pretend one service wins every case.

The ranking

  1. EUR 19.90 to 24.90 excluding VAT

Best for imports and any car with a European history

MrVIN reports are built from official registries and licensed sources across 30+ European countries, which is precisely the coverage a UK only check cannot offer: the car's life before it ever crossed into Britain. For an import, or a car you merely suspect was one, that pre UK history is the whole question.

The price, EUR 19.90 to 24.90 excluding VAT, is visible before you type a VIN, and the free preview shows what was actually found for your car before you pay for it. A public sample report is available to see the format first.

  2. HPI GBP 19.99

The UK institution since 1938, unmatched on finance

HPI has been the default UK vehicle check since 1938 and owns the category name in Britain. Its outstanding finance data is outstanding in the literal sense, and the GBP 30,000 data guarantee behind it is a real, uncommon commitment few competitors match anywhere in Europe.

It covers UK registered cars only, at GBP 19.99 per check. For a car that has genuinely never left Britain and where finance is the main worry, that is not a weakness, it is the right tool used correctly, and for that specific case it is the safest pick on this list.

  3. carVertical about EUR 25 to 40

Widest country list, usually the most expensive

carVertical advertises the widest country list of any service here, 35+ countries, which can matter for a UK car imported from an unusual market. The price only appears at checkout, usually about EUR 25 to 40 before discount timers, and it is typically the most expensive way to check one car.

  4. autoDNA EUR 24.99

Honest public pricing, also covers US vehicles

autoDNA publishes its price openly at EUR 24.99 per report, with a three pack at EUR 49.99 bringing the per report cost to EUR 16.66, useful if you are checking several cars. It also covers vehicles from the USA, a genuine plus for a UK buyer looking at an American import specifically.

Why imports are the UK's blind spot

A UK focused check will correctly flag a car as imported, that part is not the problem. The problem is what it does not tell you next: the flag says the car arrived from abroad, it does not say what happened to it before it did. MOT history, the record most UK buyers lean on, only starts from the point the car was first tested in Britain, so an import can carry years of prior mileage, damage or ownership that a UK only check simply has no visibility into.

That gap is exactly where MrVIN's coverage sits: official registries and licensed sources across the car's countries of origin, so the pre UK life that MOT history and a UK only check cannot see becomes visible before you buy.

The free GOV.UK checks to run first

Two official services cost nothing and belong before any paid check on a UK registered car.

  • MOT history the GOV.UK MOT history service shows every MOT result since 2005 with the mileage recorded at each test, the next test due and, in Great Britain, what failed and what was noted as a minor problem. You need only the registration number.
  • Vehicle tax the GOV.UK vehicle tax check shows whether the car is taxed or declared off the road with a SORN. A car advertised as in daily use that has been off the road for a year needs a story.
What both free checks have in common

They begin when the car entered the British system. For a car imported from Europe or Japan the MOT history starts at its first British test, so the years before that are simply absent, not checked and found clean.

The paid UK checks, and what their prices buy

Every paid UK check below covers the questions that decide a British purchase: outstanding finance, insurance write offs, theft and plate changes. They differ in price, in the guarantee behind the data and in how clearly they flag an import.

  • HPI the full check costs GBP 19.99, three checks GBP 29.99, with a GBP 30,000 data guarantee. HPI also sells a basic check without the finance data.
  • Total Car Check the Gold check costs GBP 9.99 with a GBP 30,000 guarantee, and both of its tiers list import and export markers alongside finance, write off and theft data. A cheaper Silver tier carries a smaller guarantee.
  • RAC the full check costs GBP 14.99 with a GBP 30,000 guarantee, mileage discrepancy checks and plate change history. Its basic tier covers theft, write off, import, export and debt without the finance detail.
  • The AA the single check costs GBP 14.99, is powered by HPI and carries up to GBP 30,000 of cover for inaccuracies.

Any of them answers the British questions well. None of them answers the European ones: a car that spent its first years in Germany or France arrives in these databases on the day it was first registered here.

Write off categories and outstanding finance, in one minute

Insurers in Britain have used four write off categories since October 2017. Two mean the car should never be on the road again, and two mean it can be.

  • Category A so badly damaged that it must be scrapped, and no part of it may be reused.
  • Category B the body must be scrapped, but some parts may be salvaged for spares.
  • Category S structural damage that can be professionally repaired before the car returns to the road.
  • Category N no structural damage, often cosmetic or too costly to repair against the car's value. It can return to the road.

Outstanding finance is the other British risk. While a finance agreement is unpaid the lender owns the car and can repossess it, even from a private buyer who paid the seller in full. That is the question HPI and the other UK checks are built to answer, and a European check is not.

How to tell a UK car was imported

An import is not a problem in itself. It matters because the car's earlier life is in no British record, so it is worth knowing before you rely on one.

  • Dates that disagree a date of first registration in Britain years after the year the car was built.
  • A late MOT history the first MOT on record arrives long after a British car of that age would have had one.
  • A Q plate issued by the DVLA when it cannot establish a vehicle's age or identity, often on personal imports with incomplete paperwork.
  • The paid checks Total Car Check, the RAC and several others list import and export markers from the vehicle record.

Which check for which UK car

  1. Always British run the free MOT history, then one paid UK check for finance and write off status. That is usually enough.
  2. Imported, or you are not sure add a European check for the years before the car reached Britain, and preview what it holds for the VIN before paying.
  3. Imported from the United States or Canada the American records matter most, and CARFAX is often the service holding them.
  4. Any car have it inspected before you pay. No report, British or European, can see a worn clutch or a poor repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is an HPI check enough for an imported car?

No. An HPI check correctly flags that a car was imported, but its records largely stop at the UK border, so it will not show you what happened to the car before it arrived. For an import, pair it with, or replace it with, a European check that covers the car's country of origin.

What is the difference between an HPI check and a VIN check?

HPI focuses on UK records: outstanding finance, UK write off categories, UK plate and VIN changes, backed by its GBP 30,000 data guarantee. A European VIN check like MrVIN follows the car's life across 30+ countries: mileage readings over time, damage, theft flags and registration history wherever the car has actually been.

Should I run MrVIN and HPI together for an import?

For a genuine import it is a reasonable combination rather than an either-or: HPI covers UK finance and write off status, MrVIN covers the car's life before it reached Britain. Together they usually cost around the price of a tank of fuel, small money against getting either the finance status or the import history wrong.

Does outstanding finance show up on a European VIN check?

Not reliably, UK finance agreements are recorded in UK-specific finance databases that HPI is built to search, not in the European registries and licensed sources a service like MrVIN draws on. For a UK registered car, checking finance status specifically still means running a UK focused check.

How do I know if a UK car was actually imported?

A UK vehicle check or the V5C logbook will usually flag import status directly, and a first MOT test date that comes years after the car's stated build year is a common tell. Once you know or suspect an import, that is the point to run a European check for the history a UK only source cannot see.

Is the free MOT history check enough?

For mileage over a car's British life it is excellent, and it is free: every MOT since 2005 records the reading. It says nothing about outstanding finance or insurance write offs, and nothing about the years before an imported car reached Britain.

What do the Cat S and Cat N write off categories mean?

Both mean an insurer wrote the car off but it may return to the road. Category S means structural damage that was professionally repaired; Category N means the damage was not structural. Either should lower the price, and a seller should disclose it.

What is the cheapest proper UK car check?

The budget tiers from Total Car Check and MyCarCheck cost a few pounds and cover theft, write off and export markers, but check that the tier includes outstanding finance before relying on it. The full checks from the RAC and the AA cost GBP 14.99, and HPI's costs GBP 19.99.
